September Book Report
A speed read through my five most recent reads + a couple of bonus reads 📚
James by Percival Everett: You know the classic Huckleberry Finn, but this novel is from the perspective of his slave Jim. This book is a phenomenal piece of literature I’m still thinking about today.
If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finley: This story, told through multiple points of view, kept me guessing until the end. Haunted by his girlfriend’s unsolved disappearance, Ryan’s life is upended when her car is found in a lake five years later, forcing him to race across Europe to uncover the truth.
Lenny Marks Gets Away with Murder by Kerryn Mayne: Don’t be fooled by the title. This story focuses on the endearing, albeit peculiar, life of Lenny, a quick-to-cheer-on protagonist who, for decades, struggles to remember the events of a traumatic moment in her childhood.
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore: This book might make my Top 5 of 2024 list. A young girl from a prominent family vanishes, mirroring a mysterious disappearance from years before. As the search unfolds, this book digs into hidden truths and messy relationships within the family and their community. It was hard to put down!
Big Fan by Alexandra Romanoff: Finally, a romance written for people who like to take books seriously. The best way I can put it? It’s like Scandal/Olivia Pope meets The Idea of You. Bonus: it’s less than 200 pages. I finished this in two sittings but could easily have done it in one.
Almost finished: The Lost Story by Meg Shaffer. I am loving this book, which was inspired by one of my favorite series, C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. The TLDR: Years after vanishing in a West Virginia forest and mysteriously reappearing, two friends are forced to revisit their past. When another girl’s sister goes missing in the same woods, the trio begins a journey that uncovers hidden truths and long-buried secrets.
Picking up next (to kick off spooky szn): Witch of Wild Things by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland. More to come. Stay tuned.
Your post inspires me to read more!
